A Little Perspective

Day 39: Sunday, October 14, 2012

Underway: At Marina      Motor Off: At Marina      Miles Traveled: 00      Stayed At: Marina

First Things First: First driving tour.

Mile 215 to Mile 215: We decided to stay put today with a forecast for a 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms we didn’t want to chance fate. We were able to get a courtesy car right away in the morning so we did a big loop up to Savannah to get a few essentials, and back down through the Shiloh National Military Park and over to the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center then home again. In about 5 hours we travelled as far as we go by boat in about 3 days.

Shiloh was a sobering reminder of the horror of war – especially in the mid 1800’s. Tens of thousands to soldiers were routinely killed or wounded (usually mortally) in single battles. Many more died of their wounds or disease in the horrible conditions they had to fight in. I don’t think we could handle that kind of carnage today. We have become blaze about war especially when we can fight battles long distance with drone aircraft and “only” a few soldiers are wounded or killed each week. (There is something wrong with fighting a war from some command center in California and going home for dinner at night).

We stopped in Corinth to tour the Civil War Interpretive Center and stopped for lunch at Martha’s Café – a local hot spot on Sunday afternoon. Corinth was a focal point for some major battles during the Civil War. A lot of history is buried under the woods, yards and fields in this area. You could spend days or weeks here studying the history and battlefields so we only got a small but eye opening taste. We will have to come back some other day and not just drive through this area.

After a couple short rain showers today, the skies brightened a little but the wind still stuck around until late afternoon. We were glad not to have to pound into the waves and wind all day. After putting our purchases away and finishing a few boat projects, we sat on a covered gliding chair/table next to the river and worked on the blog (I’m caught up to yesterday now) and writing a few post cards until well after dark.. Thanks to everyone who has commented on the blog posts – we really enjoy reading them and having a little connection to home. We hope our words and pictures tell an interesting story about what it is like out here on the Great Loop.

Wild Thing: Seeing 30+ large fish (mostly 2+ foot long gar) hovering just under the surface of the water next to Aurora lit up by a bright green underwater light next to the marina dock. Eerie. It’s a little disconcerting when they bump into the hull chasing their food but it is cool to watch them float around in and out of the light.
